Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his second interview to an Indian television news channel after assuming office in 2014 on Friday. In a free-wheeling chat, Modi spoke to Network 18’s Group Editor Rahul Joshi on a wide range of issues, including the the recent unrest in Kashmir, the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections and Dalit vote bank politics. On Dalits, Modi said, “All those self-appointed guardians who were trying to create tension in the country did not like that Modi is with the Dalits… That Modi devotes himself to tribals. I am devoted to the welfare of all Dalits, oppressed, underprivileged and deprived.”
An explosion killed at least 12 people and wounded at least 24 at a night market in President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown in the southern Philippines, a region under a heightened security alert because of a military offensive against Abu Sayyaf militants, officials said. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion late on Friday at a massage section of the market, which was cordoned off by police bomb experts and investigators, said regional military commander Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo. Witnesses gave conflicting accounts, with some saying that a cooking gas tank exploded while others suggested it may have been some kind of an explosive, said police Chief Superintendent Manuel Gaerlan. Police set up checkpoints in key roads leading to the city, a regional gateway about 980 kilometers (610 miles) south of Manila.

Duterte, who served as a longtime mayor of Davao before assuming the presidency in June, was in the region but has not issued any statement. His spokesman, Ernesto Abella, urged the public to be vigilant.

The quake which occurred 19 miles beneath the Earth's surface, struck 352 miles northeast of Wellington, New Zealand. It was also said to be powerful enough to wake up residents in the city of Auckland as well.

Minister for Health Gagan Thapa on Thursday met Ganga Maya Adhikari, who has been staging a fast-unto-death at the Bir Hospital demanding action against murderers of her son, while he inspected the oldest hospital of Nepal. As the Minister met her, Adhikari demanded that the government take immediate initiatives to bring murderers of her teenage son, Krishna Prasad, be brought to book. Krishna Prasad was apparently murdered by the then Maoist combatants in Chitwan district in June 2004.

Every morning, before the sun goes up, Durga Kami brushes his teeth, puts on his uniform and walks for over an hour to get to school. His routine is not too different from that of other ten graders in Nepal. Except maybe for one thing: he is 68, and one of the country’s oldest students.
A father of six—and a grandfather of eight—Kami told Reuters he was forced out of school by poverty as a kid and never fulfilled his dream of teaching.

Popular Nepali folk singer Kehm Raj Gurung passed away on Thursday in the Capital after a battle with liver infection. He was 41.Singer Gurung was admitted at Chabahil-based Medicare Hospital for treatment of his liver infection.”Khemraj is no more with us. Doctors involved in his treatment have confirmed his death,” Gurung’s acquaintance Kamalikant Bhetwal told the Post.Born in Sankhuwasabha district, Gurung had recorded 12 music albums. His popular folk song ‘Wari Jamuna Pari Jamuna’ had once become too popular among Nepali people. His other popular numbers include ‘Tamang Selo Nacchu Vanthey’, ‘Bhanchan Budapakale’, among others.He is survived by wife and two sons. His relatives are waiting for the arrival of his mother and sister from the UK to perform his last rites. Till then, his body is to be kept at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Human traffickers have been using the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal as a new route for trafficking Nepali women abroad. This came to light after the government was tipped off about 22 women stuck in Colombo, Sri Lanka in the first week of June. The daily closure of Narayanghat-Mugling road section for road widening drive has been lifted from Wednesday. The road section was closed from 11 am to 3 pm every day for upgradation. The Narayanghat-Mugling highway experiences the heaviest traffic load in the country, accounting for 90 percent of Nepal’s total international trade traffic. More than 20,000 vehicles ply the highway every day.
At least 19 passengers died on the spot and other 12 were injured when a Pokhara-bound night bus from Gaur of Rautahat fell into the Trishuli River along the Narayangarh-Mugling road section at 4.45 this morning. According to Chitwan District Police Office Chief SP Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, some six of the injured were already rescued and efforts are on to rescue other six in the incident site. The bus (Ga 1 Kha 3709) had plunged into the Trishuli River nearby Mugling. RSS
