The sun God considered to be the source of all the energy on the planet earth, is highly regarded and worshipped in Hinduism. Since the beginning of human existence, civilisations have established religious beliefs that involved the Sun's significance to some extent or other. As new civilisations developed many spiritual beliefs were based on those from the past so that there has been an evolution of the sun's significance throughout cultural development. Even as late as the 17th century the development of tarot cards for fortune telling included a card that represents the Sun's influence on the life of man.
Surya (Sanskrit: Sūrya, "the Supreme Light" Suraya or Phra Athit is the chief solar deity in Hinduism. The term Surya also refers to the Sun, in general.(Ref WKPD) Surya is the chief of the Nava graha ( 9 PLANETS), Indo Himalayan "Classical planets" and important elements of Hindu astrology. He is often depicted riding a chariot harnessed by seven horses or one horse with seven heads.
